One Balloon: Silent Attack on the American Homeland

One Balloon: Silent Attack on the American Homeland is based on a true World War II event that occurred in southeastern Oregon near Klamath Falls on May 5, 1945. On that day, K.C.’s aunt Elsie, pregnant with her first child, and five youths were killed by a balloon bomb launched from Japan. The incident, one of many balloon bomb attacks sent toward the United States, was covered up and classified as top secret for several weeks, leaving the tragedy largely unknown for decades.

Through the author’s emotion-filled illustrations and imagining, One Balloon weaves together historical events and the power of the human spirit in facing them. The story explores the lasting impact of war while revealing a compelling tapestry of unexpected compassion and forgiveness. The lives of Yuzuru and Reiko, two individuals shaped by war, meet decades later and form a pilgrimage of reconciliation that reflects the possibility of healing across generations.

Blending history, art, and human experience, One Balloon brings attention to a little-known chapter of World War II while offering a thoughtful reflection on loss, memory, and the enduring strength of compassion.
